Description
Gardenia’s fifth album entitled “Black Gothic” (Polish: “Czarny Gotyk”) is the most raw in their thirty-year history and stylistically the most “rock” album. This album owes its mood to, among others, the work by Mirosław Gil – a guitarist of the Believe group. Simplicity and riff are the most important medium for the lyrics of vocalist Radosław Nowak talking about threats and alienation in the modern world, passing away and death. The cover itself tries to capture the subject of transgression – going to another dimension.
Gardenia tries to face the most important questions that anyone has to ask sooner or later – reflecting on their existence. It’s just mature, serious music created by mature people – the best record in their output. The title “Czarny Gotyk” does not define the style of this music – it’s just a rhyme to the verse “Śmierci dotyk” (EN: “touch of death”)…
Gardenia was founded in 1987 in Warsaw, Poland. The following year they released a debut (analogue) record under the Pronit label. In the 80’s and 90’s, Gardenia gave a lot of concerts both in small clubs and at large festivals, including Róbrege and Jarocin. Critics described the music style of Gardenia as a “psychedelic punk” or “cold wave”. The most popular song played on the radio was “Cigarettes and matches” (Polish: “Papierosy i zapałki”).
Gardenia works more or less intensively today, currently playing in its original lineup:
Radosław Nowak – vocals
Alek Januszewski – guitar
Przemysław Wójcicki – bass
Mariusz Radzikowski – drums
