Description
Dr Zolo is a Polish experimental trio operating at the intersection of avant-garde jazz, punk, and electronic music. The Warsaw-based band combines performance intensity with compositional precision and sonic boldness.
Their debut album, Trickster Music, was recorded live in one take in a repurposed WWII-era air raid shelter, capturing the full energy and uncompromising approach of the band. No edits, no overdubs – just three musicians, one room, and a pure urge for sonic release.
The group’s sound is shaped by the deep bass of a synthesizer and the textures of a mellotron (Maciek Dymek), expressive acoustic drums (Paweł Kowalski), and the intense saxophone lines of Bartosz Smorągiewicz – a composer and soloist with international experience including the Tokyo Jazz Festival and the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop in New York.
Dr Zolo’s style defies easy classification – it resembles a soundtrack to a noir film, an industrial club set, and a free jazz improvisation all at once. This is music that demands your full attention.
The album features, among others: reinterpretations of earlier compositions (Ego, Superego, Id), the nine-minute Poruta, the energetic Traktor, the cinematic Blady Szczur, and a surprising cover of Caravan. Trickster Music is a sonic journey through unexpected landscapes – at times raw and rhythmic, at others spacious and unsettling.
The Trickster Music album was released online on June 13, 2025. The CD premiere took place on July 3 during the band’s concert at the Warsaw Summer Jazz Days festival. The album is also available on Spotify and other streaming platforms.
